Wojciech Kilar departed forever. On January 4th at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Katowice we said goodbye to an outstanding composer and a wonderful human being - Wojciech Kilar. There is no exaggeration in stating that, next to Mieczyslaw Karlowicz and Karol Szymanowski, he created the greatest tribute to the beauty of the Tatra Mountains. An event with an exceptional dimension in this context was an August 29, 1977 concert, where, for the first time, Wojciech's "Krzesany" resonated alongside Karol Szymanowski's "Harnasie" and Mieczyslaw Karlowicz's "Odwieczne Piesni" on the courtyard of the Wawel Castle. Not even a year after a successful world premiere at the XVIII Warsaw Autumn Festival... Wojciech was one of the founding members of our Association and, together with Witold Rowicki, the vice-president of the first board of directors. His involvement in the Association's work diminished over time because of his health problems. When "Krzesany" was presented for the first time in 1997 at the Church of St. Cross in Zakopane the composer could not participate for the same reason. But he was there in spirit together with the Radio Symphony Orchestra from Krakow, the director, Tomasz Bugaj and beside the music lovers in attendance. True to his proverbial modesty, Wojciech didn't exhibit his love for the Tatra Mountains and for Karol Szymanowki's music. But this love was deep and true. It was apparent in his music and his comments. In 1992 he agreed to accept the post of an Honorary Member of our Association bestowed upon him by the General Assembly. Until the end he maintained his connection to his friends and colleagues devoted to the cause of Karol Szymanowski - the greatest Polish composer of the first half of the XX century. We will miss him.
